Gastr Del Sol I can't handle that Gastr Del Sol aren't making music anymore. This stuff, first of all it sounds really good. I mean that it is never accidentally harsh, and it cares for the listener in general - recorded by Steve Albini. I just love the structures, the minimalism-interrupted-by-maximalism, the sound of the voice. The lyrics have not yet exceeded strange, for me. Are there any bands like Gastr Del Sol any more? I listened to some music by this band called the Animal Collective, and comparing it to GDS I reflected that while Jim O'Rourke and David Grubbs (the boiler room and penthouse of Gastr Del Sol's very short apartment building) make odd music, it universally has a consistency, no an integrity to it, while the Animal Coll. seems to be bouncing around the studio, "hey what if I like, hit a cucumber on a piano stool, and then you, well, maybe you could jump around or sing or somethinglikethat or maybe play some notes, and it would sound really messed up and people will like it!" bb, 13 Jun 08 |
