Dire Straits is interesting, because some of their music is classic, and a lot is just questionable. For example, Lady Writer has some of the most perplexing, in a not so great way, lyrics I've come across. The odd thing is that it is apparently a very personal song.

My theory is that Mark Knopfler has to work a lot harder to write songs about other people, like Money For Nothing - he has to think hard to create the ideas that he wants to express. For the expressionful songs, he just writes the things that are "true", and ends up with an odd jumble.

Mark Knopfler is the person who made it OK for me to play electric guitar with fingers, rather than a pick.

"Best of" albums... blech.
